This sweet & spicy mushroom pizza sauce is SO GOOD!!! It’s more sweet than spicy, but it does have a kick. Add it to any pizza crust of your choice, add on a couple additional toppings before placing it in the oven and you have yourself a killer, fun meal. It is really simple to make and always turns out great, but it does take a long time to cook on the stovetop. The lengthy simmer time is where the magic happens! So if you are looking for a fast meal, take a hard pass on this one, however when you have the time, I think you will love it. It feels like a date night, movie night type of meal.

Ingredients
Cook Time -1 HR 15 Min
This makes enough sauce for 2 regular sized pizza crusts. Since the only thing I add on top of my pizza after the mushroom sauce is sliced red onion and sometimes sliced Miyoko’s mozzarella cheese (cashew cheese), I add a fairly thick layer. The sauce is the star of the show. I use the remaining leftover sauce to toss with pasta noodles for another meal later in the week.
16 oz organic brown mushrooms
1/4 cup diced red onion
24 oz bottle Bionaturae Strained Tomatoes
10 grinds on the pepper mill or 1/4 tsp ground pepper
1/2 tsp sea salt or Himalayan Salt
1/4 tsp cayenne
1 TBSP maple syrup
1 TBSP honey
1/2 squeeze of lime
1/2 squeeze of lemon
Instructions
- Slice the mushrooms and dice the onions.
- Add all of the ingredients to a large Sauté Pan over medium heat and stir everything together well. I use this GreenPan for pretty much everything and I highly recommend it.
- COVER and cook on medium-low to medium at a really good simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour stirring occasionally. I cook 2 notches below medium on my stovetop.
- After this, take off the cover and simmer for another 20 minutes.
- Now stir it and turn the heat down a bit for another 10 minutes. This process gets the mushrooms to cook down even more and makes it all thick and saucy.
- Your sauce is ready! Taste the deliciousness! Add it to your desired pizza crust, add additional toppings of your choice and bake in the oven. When I am adding it to my crust I bake it with the toppings for around 20 min until the crust is done. (Crusts also require baking time on their own prior to putting on toppings and baking that last final 20 minutes or so).

Riane’s Tidbits
- 1/4 cup onion does not seem like much, but I also add an additional 1/4 cup sliced red onion to the top of my pizza right before the pizza goes in the oven. If you want to add in a little more onion to the sauce instead, go for it. It’s really delicious as is though.
- I buy the 24 oz pack of organic brown mushrooms at Costco and remove 1/3 of them for another meal.
- Crust sizes are different. If you are using the smaller Banza premade pizza crusts, this will be enough sauce for the 2 crusts in the box and you’ll still have a little leftover.
- We use the MM sweet potato tortilla recipe as a pizza crust with adding in 1 TBSP each of garlic powder, onion powder, and dried oregano. We also use extra tablespoons of water to get it to knead into a dough. It’s a lengthy process with making the sweet potato prior, so I will still be trying out some new crusts, but for now it’s mine and my husband’s favorite. Plus, we have gotten faster at it with time. We bake it on a parchment lined baking sheet at 400 degrees for 12-15 minutes, flip it over and bake another 10-15 minutes before adding on the sauce/toppings to bake that final 20 minutes.
- I got the idea from this sauce from a post Medical Medium Mommy did last year. She mentioned ingredients she used, but she didn’t have any measurements, so it inspired me to figure out this recipe. I’ve made it many times without fail, it’s just time I got around to posting a recipe!
So grateful you are following along! xx Riane
