Sweet & Spicy Mushroom Pizza Sauce

This sweet & spicy mushroom pizza sauce is SO GOOD!!! It's more sweet than spicy, but it does have a kick. Add it to any pizza crust of your choice, add on a couple additional toppings before placing it in the oven and you have yourself a killer, fun meal. It is really simple to make and always turns out great, but it does take a long time to cook on the stovetop. The lengthy simmer time is where the magic happens! It feels like a date night, movie night type of meal.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 1 hour 15 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 16 oz organic brown mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup diced red onion
  • 24 oz bottle Bionaturae Strained Tomatoes
  • 10 grinds on the pepper mill or 1/4 tsp ground pepper
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt or Himalayan Salt
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne
  • 1 TBSP maple syrup
  • 1 TBSP honey
  • 1/2 squeeze of lime
  • 1/2 squeeze of lemon

Method

  1. Slice the mushrooms and dice the onions.
  2. Add all of the ingredients to a large Sauté Pan over medium heat and stir everything together well. I use this GreenPan for pretty much everything and I highly recommend it.
  3. COVER and cook on medium-low to medium at a really good simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour stirring occasionally. I cook 2 notches below medium on my stovetop.
  4. After this, take off the cover and simmer for another 20 minutes.
  5. Now stir it and turn the heat down a bit for another 10 minutes. This process gets the mushrooms to cook down even more and makes it all thick and saucy.
  6. Your sauce is ready! Taste the deliciousness! Add it to your desired pizza crust, add additional toppings of your choice and bake in the oven. When I am adding it to my crust I bake it with the toppings for around 20 min until the crust is done. (Crusts also require baking time on their own prior to putting on toppings and baking that last final 20 minutes or so).

Notes

This makes enough sauce for 2 regular sized pizza crusts. Since the only thing I add on top of my pizza after the mushroom sauce is sliced red onion and sometimes sliced Miyoko's mozzarella cheese (cashew cheese), I add a fairly thick layer. The sauce is the star of the show. I use the remaining leftover sauce to toss with pasta noodles for another meal later in the week.
