Banana Mango Blue Butterfly Smoothie

December 30, 2024

Banana Mango Blue Butterfly Pea Flower Powder Smoothie

We eat with our eyes first so this banana mango blue butterfly smoothie is extra fun to eat. The pretty bluish purple color comes from a powder called blue butterfly pea flower powder. Say that 10x. 😊 You can think of it as an all natural food coloring that does not contain any of the nasty ingredients that typical food coloring has. Depending on how much powder you use and what ingredients you mix it with, the color changes from different blues to purple.

  • The color varies depending on the amount of liquid and ingredients it is mixed with.
  • If you add it to hot water, you get a dark blue.
  • If you add in an acidic ingredient like lemon or lime, it changes the pH of the water and turns it purple.
  • Whatever I mix it with, I like to start with a 1/4 tsp and see what color it turns into before adding in more.
  • It’s a fun one for kids and big kids!

Benefits of blue butterfly pea flower powder

Besides turning food, drinks, and frosting blue or purple, blue butterfly pea flower contains antioxidants and is great for our skin. It’s also known to help improve moods and give a more calming feeling. This is especially true when mixed with with teas like chamomile or added into baths. I sometimes add a tsp to my nighttime baths. In India, it is traditionally used as a tea in spiritual devotions.

Does blue butterfly pea flower powder have a taste?

It has a very mild earthy green tea taste with a faint sweet floral smell. Because it is so mild, you can mix it with about anything.
