10 things. 9/13

10 things. 913 her healthy style substack newsletter
  1. The $100 protein smoothie I’m having in the morning after fruit lately. Spoiler alert. One smoothie does not cost $100.
  2. It feels like a slow cooker black bean chili weekend. I want to highlight some notes to give you a heads up incase you’re thinking about making it. I use dried black beans in this recipe: Dried black beans need to be soaked overnight in a bowl of water prior to cooking this recipe so they soften up some. They also take about 8 or so hours in the slow cooker (after soaking), but it is so worth it when you have the time. Dried beans are also generally more affordable and cut down on the metal cans (no shame/judgment when you use them, I do too, but the less the better). This is a good chili to make in the morning to have ready for dinner time.
    • If you want a much quicker Fall-like recipe, make these sweet potato tacos (basically sweet potatoes, coconut oil, and curry powder). My girlfriend just messaged me that she made them, which reminded me of this simple recipe. One you can easily customize with toppings, black beans, etc. There are lots of pictures in the recipe for inspo too.
  3. If you’re in need of a humidifier for your bedroom now that it’s getting a bit drier, I’ve had a Canopy bedroom humidifier for a few years and really like it. It doesn’t mold as long as you use it correctly. I fill it with water at night and dump any remaining water when I get up in the morning. This way the filter has a chance to fully dry out by the time I fill it at night. I often fill it halfway if it’s not going through a whole thing of water at night. It’s also easy to clean need be. Just note the “natural aromatherapy” oils are not pure so I tossed those right away. I also eventually set up a filter subscription for 3 filters at a time so I didn’t have to pay for shipping. I think I’m set up to get 3 filters every 5 months? You can edit shipping when you need them though.
  4. On the flip side if you have an area of your home that is too damp or has a funky smell – laundry room, older home, closets, etc, I use air purifying charcoal bags for this. They say they are reusable for two years, but I’ve used some at our cottage for closer to 4 years before replacing. You just need to place them outside to recharge in the sunlight once every 1-2 months. The bigger bags work best of course, but I am packing some small ones (meant for stinky shoes, gym bags, etc.) for our trip next week as we are staying in a older motel. Cute, but older, so packing just incase it’s a damp room.
  5. One of our guests are celebrating their 90th birthday at our cottage, so I went on Etsy to find a retro happy birthday sign to hang in the kitchen. I didn’t find anything that I loved, so I resorted back to Amazon and ordered this colorful wool garland. I wanted something that I would reuse over and over and the small 2.5″ letter size sold me. When it comes in the mail, it looks like the smallest thing ever, but you can spread out the letters as much as you want. The balls are cute for kids, but I plan on taking the balls off the string. I was tempted to get this 4″ letter garland for around half the price, but Mark said he liked the 2.5″ as well (liked the size and seemingly better quality) so I went with that. If you want a bigger impact though or are using for a kids party, I would look at the 4.”.
  6. Mark slipped and fell earlier this week and hurt his back and neck. He’s turned around quickly thankfully, but I wanted to share his go-to supplements that helped with the pain this week:
    • Gaia Turmeric Supreme Extra Strength (two capsules twice during the day)
    • Magnesium Glycinate (a higher amount before bed)
    • Magnesium baths
    • Day 1 he took Genexa Extra Strength Acetaminophen for the brutal pain. Something neither of us rarely use, but it’s in the cabinet when we need it.
    • Besides the above, he’s been taking more immune boosting supplements, having a ginger tea concoction (Golden Milks are great anti-inflammatory drinks), a higher amount of anti-inflammatory Omega 3’s in the form of flaxseed in his smoothie, hydrating more, and taking it easy.
    • one of those microwavable neck pack wraps – ours was gifted, but this one looks/sounds similar
  7. If you have easily tangled, thick, or curly hair, the combination of these two brushes makes washing my hair a much easier task. I use the UNbrush in the shower. I brush after the conditioner has sat for a few minutes. I then put my head/hair upside down in the warm running water and start brushing the length from the bottom up. I don’t get my hair perfectly brushed in the shower, but it’s a good start. After I’m out, I put my hair in a wrap for 30 minutes to an hour to get it a bit dryer and then brush from the bottom up with this Bounce Curl brush.
  8. I love the plumping effect I see each time I use Agent Nateur’s toner in the morning. I just spray 2 pumps on my fingertips, rub them together, and kind of pat it all over my face. I then let it sit for a second so my face is dryer before rubbing an oil on top. Pricey, but a bottle lasts me a long time. I ordered the smaller 30 ml size my first time to see how well I liked it before committing to a larger size. I still saved the smaller bottle to pour some in for travel.
  9. This week’s Quince Picks: Free shipping, 365 day returns, and quality products for amazing prices is why I shop Quince often. Their leather jackets! I love my Motorcycle Jacket (I sized up to a small here, but could have easily went with a medium too!). Since buying the jacket a few years ago, they have added so many different styles like this Oversized Biker Jacket.
  10. This week’s quote courtesy of one my girlfriend shared with me: “Sacrifice for what you want, or what you want will become the sacrifice.”
