10 things. 8/30

August 29, 2025

10 things. 830 her healthy style substack newsletter

This week’s 10 things 8/30:

  1. It’s that time of year, I start lighting more candles. Pure beeswax or coconut wax only and I watch out for “blends” as these usually contain soy or paraffin too. When I’m not paying attention to a lit candle (I’ve had a candle fire in my home that resulted in our condo sprinkler system flooding 12 or 13 other units …. yes, yikes – thankfully we have good insurance that paid everyone’s deductibles to avoid lawsuits), I’ll add Fall scented essential oils like pumpkin spice to the diffuser. They both make the house feel cozier. I’m using up old candles right now, but I stumbled upon these 100% coconut wax candles and ordered a few – some for myself, some as gifts. I love that they have the crackling wood wick too.
  2. I just finished reading the memoir of Ina Garten also known as Barefoot Contessa. I grew up with Martha Stewart on the TV in my house and once Ina was on years later, my mom watched her. My mom is one of thee best cooks. Nothing against Martha, but I much preferred Ina on. Anyways, my mom had two book copies and gave me one to put in our rental cottage. No one touched it so I ended up taking it home. I’m so glad that I did! It was one I wanted to keep reading and not put down. Ina’s life is extremely interesting whether you know who she is or not. She shares about her many career moves (she is an incredibly hard worker), her struggles, her marriage, her food and entertaining of course, and her insightful life advice along the way. One of her life lessons that her husband Jeffrey told her – “Do what you love because if you love it, you’ll be really good at it.” Book on Amazon.
  3. I’ve been a sponge researching and reading more about gut health lately, and I was reminded of something I wasn’t doing lately and learned something new that may be helpful to you now or down the road. Firstly, if we are taking both probiotics to increase our healthy bacteria and antifungal supplements, it’s advised to separate when we take these. I usually do this, but lately I was taking some antifungal tinctures right on top of my probiotics (on an empty stomach first thing in the morning). Each can do a better job if we separate them. Now I still take my probiotics and a few other tinctures along with them first thing in the morning, but I save my antifungals for later. The biggest tidbit for me though was reading more on needing the presence of fat from food when taking certain vitamins for optimal absorption. Vitamin D specifically stood out to me as while I don’t have a blood test to confirm it, I feel I’ve been low in D for awhile despite me taking it. For longer than not, I’ve kept dietary fat out of my morning until more recently and this is usually when I take supplements. I’m now just making a point to watch when I take supplements and take Vitamin D3 along with others, alongside a meal with fat in it. I’ve also been trying out different brands of supplements too. When/if I notice a difference with anything, I’ll share. As always, this is not medical advice. Just something to share incase it helps you, but always do your own research.
  4. These crispy chickpeas on top of this simple Dino/Tuscan kale salad is on heavy rotation for lunch right now. It’s so good and feels like a great salad this time of year.
  5. If the above salad doesn’t cut it for you, try out this easy lentil taco salad with a creamy cashew chipotle dressing. Even the non-salad lovers should like this one with that creamy cashew dressing.
  6. I recently bought this Berbere Ethiopian 12 spice blend and have been deliberately sprinkling it on many dinners lately. I highly recommend. It’s inexpensive too!
  7. If you feel like take-out/restaurant pizza/whatever it is this holiday weekend, enjoy every last bite. I believe a healthy, nourishing, and joyful lifestyle is all about balance and sustainability. This of course looks different to each one of us and changes with seasons and needs, but nonetheless a healthy lifestyle is not all or nothing.
  8. This reminds me. I recently watched a YouTube video in which the Dr. advised his clients to one “free meal” a week if they wanted it. First off, although I’m not big on labeling meals, I kind of liked the term “free meal.” I’ve never resonated with the term “cheat meal.” To me, no matter what I’m eating – a kale salad or takeout – it’s all part of my healthy lifestyle. I view it as a whole picture. The term “cheat meal” sounds like I would be doing something wrong. Anyways, I kind of liked his “free meal” term and that he advised his clients (who were able to) to enjoy one free meal a week of whatever the heck they wanted that was not on their specified diet plan he gave them. He shared that this worked well both mentally and physically (mental emotions have a big impact on the physical) as his clients didn’t develop a fear of foods, empowered them to be more in charge of what they put into their own bodies instead of him telling them, and it taught them that they did enjoy eating healthier on the norm since they felt better. I think there is something to this in my personal opinion and wanted to share incase it resonates with you.
  9. “To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly.” unknown
