I have a mix of curls, waves, and straight hair. Growing up my mom put my hair in hot rollers until I no longer wanted it. I also had a lot of years of straightening my hair, some scrunching my hair with gel, and a bit of everything in-between. My hair can really go in many different ways. However, the past ten years or so, I’ve figured out a way that I barely have to do my hair. Needless to say, my wavy hair care routine has stuck (video below). I’ll do something different every so often to change it up, since that’s fun too, but right now this is my norm. Even if you don’t have naturally curly or wavy hair, hopefully you’ll be able to create some beachy waves with braids and the products I use or just take away a random tip.
My Wavy Hair Care Routine | VIDEO
- I wash my hair once a week, sometimes twice.
- Double cleanse with shampoo.
- I shampoo my hair twice and rinse with cold water with my hair upside down. (I show you in the video below).
- I rotate shampoos. I’m currently using Act + Acre.
- Condition my hair.
- I condition the length of my hair, but not the top/roots unless I’m doing an overnight hair mask; then I’ll put it everywhere.
- I leave hair conditioner on for 5-10 minutes while I exfoliate, shave, and wash my face.
- I rinse with cold water with my head upside down.
- If my hair is not super tangled, I comb my hair with a wide tooth comb while the conditioner is still in it. When it’s super knotty though, I wait until my hair is more dry before I brush it. This is solely because it’s less work for my specific hair.
- I rotate conditioners, but right now I have Act + Acre and Innersense in my shower. I like this detox mask when I have buildup.
- Put my hair up in a hair wrap.
- This speeds up the drying time and helps with frizz. I have an old bamboo Hubalou wrap that seems to be discontinued. You could always use a t-shirt in a pinch too. Whatever you do, just pass on the terrycloth towel on the norm as it creates more frizz and breakage.
- Brush my hair.
- If I didn’t already comb my hair in the shower, I’ll brush it after my hair dries a bit. I hold my hair and brush from the bottom up. This is the new brush I’m using. I hate that it’s cheap plastic, but it works better than my wood one.
- Apply product to slightly damp hair.
- I apply a small amount of Le Baume to my fingertips and apply all over with my hands. It’s an amazing balm that is great for most hair types. It softens hair, makes it silkier, adds shine, tames frizz, and helps hold a style a bit longer. I’ll sometimes use it during the week to freshen up my hair too. I highly recommend it.
- After the Le Baume, I spray my hands with I Create Waves and then apply it to the length of my hair. It’s a sticker spray, so by applying it with my hands, it avoids that producty feeling. On occasion though, I’ll use it like a hairspray and spray it directly on my hair.
- Braid my hair when it’s just slightly damp.
- Braiding my already wavy hair when it’s dryer keeps my hair from being so tight and curly. If you have straight hair though and are trying to make waves, I would absolutely braid it when it’s more wet.
- I leave the braids in overnight before taking them out.
- My hair is now ready for the week.
- Sometimes I’ll spray rosewater directly on my hair here and there during the week too. It’s a super soft scent that is not overpowering, softens my hair, and refreshes it a bit.
- I still sleep with my hair in braids most nights as well.
