Natural Shampoo and Conditioner Brands

Best Natural Shampoo and Conditioner Brands

When it comes to switching out your personal products for cleaner, less toxic ones, haircare can be the hardest. There are SO many great clean makeup brands and skincare that work just as well (& better) than conventional ones, but I feel like it takes a little longer to find the perfect natural shampoo and conditioner. I’m sharing a roundup of natural shampoo and conditioner brands I use or have used, as well as a few others that are highly rated. Although I know what works for me, may not work for you, hopefully something below will help lead you in the right direction in finding one that does.

I personally like to change up what I am using and even rotate brands. Some give more volume, some clean the scalp better, some are more moisturizing, some lather better, and some promote hair growth.

Natural Shampoo and Conditioner Brands

Under Luna Warrior Shampoo and Revive Conditioner

These are in my shower right now and they are amazing. Under Luna Warrior Shampoo is formulated for scalp, repair, revitalization, and overall hair growth. I feel like this is a great one for many! My hair was in need of something and this really helped it out. It just feels healthier using it. The scent is a very light sage and citrus. Under Luna also carries a scent free shampoo as well as a baby shampoo. Their shampoos are concentrated, so you don’t need to use that much per wash.

Under Luna Revive Conditioner is a deep conditioner for thick hair. However, it can also be used as a hair mask for all hair types. If you have extra dry hair and it’s crying out for help like mine was, look into this one. It’s extremely moisturizing and smells of beautiful jasmine. It took me a little bit to figure out the right amount to use as it is somewhat heavy, but now I know that I don’t need to use a lot. Besides this conditioner, Under Luna has 3 others depending on what you are looking for. I also love that this women owned, small company has samples that you can purchase to try out what you want before purchasing a larger bottle (if you are unsure).

True Botanicals Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner

This is the other set in my shower that I have used for years. I still rotate it in. It works wonders for my thick, dry, and wavy/curly hair. I apply a small amount of shampoo to my wet hair and scrub around root to tip, rinse it, and then lather another pump in my hands, and really massage it all over. There is not much of a lather in my hair that first shampoo, but the second application lathers up nicely. I rinse it out and then apply the conditioner from my neck down. I let the conditioner soak in for a good 5 minutes prior to rinsing while I shave. You also don’t have to use as much conditioner to moisturize your hair when you let it soak in for a bit.

This set gives my hair more volume than the Under Luna hair care does. The Under Luna haircare provides more moisture and a better deep scalp cleanse.

John Masters Organics Conditioner For Dry Hair with Lavender & Avocado

Hair Milk with Rose & Apricot

John Masters Organics Scalp Stimulating Shampoo with Spearmint & Meadowseet

John Masters Organics is a brand that you can find on Amazon, Whole Foods, and other natural health and beauty stores. I’ve tried a few of their products, but the conditioner for dry hair with lavender & avocado was my favorite. We all have different hair types though, so check out the whole line and see what you think would work best for you.

dermachange Thick & Full Hair Growth Shampoo and Conditioner Set

This is the set I bought for my husband. If you saw his bald head, you would laugh, however, I figured I would try to help him keep the little hair he still has. It’s a set that Medical Medium recommended on his website. Although I can’t say a ton about it, I have used the set a few times and I do think it’s great. The shampoo feels extra drying on my hair, but as soon as I apply the extremely moisturizing conditioner, it leaves my hair feeling silky smooth. I think it actually makes my hair feel the silkiest out of the 3 conditioners in my shower.

A note on hair growth: Castor oil helps promote hair growth. You could apply it to your hair one or two times a week and sleep with it in braids before washing your hair in the morning. If you don’t have long hair, massage it all over the scalp.

Natural Shampoo and Conditioner Brands that I have not used, but are worth checking out too.

Act + Acre

I love good volume, and this brand appears to deliver in great scalp health and voluminous hair. It was between this brand and Under Luna for me, but I went with Under Luna.

Avalon Organics

A popular inexpensive brand. You may want to check out their well rated Biotin B-Complex Thickening Therapy Shampoo.

That is it for my roundup! I will add more to the list here if I come across any more to recommend. If you are reading this and already love what you are using, please share in the comment section below!

Hair Care Tips

I am not a hair expert, but hopefully some of these tips that I have learned will help you too.

  1. Give it time when you transition to a new shampoo or conditioner. It can take a good 5-10 washes or so before your hair adjusts to it and your hair starts to look and feel better. It may just be a period of your hair detoxing out the excess chemicals found in your prior conventional products. (Your hair may feel dry and coarse during this time though). With this said, sometimes it just isn’t going to work for your hair. To avoid waste, use shampoos for bubble bath and conditioner for shaving your legs.
  2. Oily hair needs more frequent cleansing and drier, thick hair needs much less cleansing. This is why you hear opposing information of how often you should wash your hair. Just do what works for you.
  3. Double cleansing (which I have already mentioned) can be super helpful. Lather a good pump of shampoo in your hands first and then apply it all over your scalp and really massage it. Then get your hair wet again and lather more shampoo in your hands and then apply it all over – scalp to the ends. You will usually get much more lather in this second application. The double cleanse really deep cleans your hair, especially if you are not washing it every day. Sulfates found in conventional shampoos is why they usually lather better.
  4. Rinse your hair with cooler water. I also wash & rinse my hair upside down sometimes to give it a bit more volume. Not comfortable, but worth it.
  5. Some conditioners are extra heavy and weigh your hair down more. If I am using a heavier conditioner, I will just apply it to the bottom half of my hair so it does not weigh down any volume at my roots.
  6. I hold my hair as I brush from the bottom to avoid more breakage. I also put my hair in a hair wrap to get it a bit drier after washing it before brushing it out. If you don’t have a hair wrap, you can just use a large t-shirt and wrap it up and secure it with a headband until it dries a bit more.
  7. To help with frizz and breakage, sleep on a silk pillowcase.
