When it comes to switching out your personal products for cleaner, less toxic ones, haircare can be the hardest. There are so many great clean makeup brands and skincare that work just as well (& better) than conventional ones, but I feel like it takes a bit longer to find the right natural shampoo and conditioner. Today I want to mention 3 natural shampoo and conditioner brands that I have used/am using. I personally find that my hair likes change, so I tend to rotate brands and products. Although I know what works for me may not work for you, hopefully the below leads you to finding one that does!
Natural Shampoo and Conditioner Brands
Under Luna Warrior Shampoo

Under Luna Warrior shampoo is formulated for the scalp, repair, revitalization, and overall hair growth.
- A really great shampoo for the scalp. It took me a good ten washes or so to get used to this shampoo, but once I did I really liked it. It’s a super cleansing, more clarifying shampoo.
- You have to work to get a lather with most natural shampoos and this one is no exception. (Chemicals in conventional shampoos is what creates that big lather we might be used to). I always suggest double shampooing. I lather some shampoo in my hands, scrub my scalp well. and then rinse. I then use a little more shampoo and wash again. You get a bit more lather in your hair the second wash as your hair is cleaner after the first rinse.
- Under Luna shampoos are concentrated so you don’t need to use as much per wash.
- It is a very drying shampoo. You want to follow it up with one of their conditioners and leave it on a good 5 minutes or more before rinsing. If I don’t leave the conditioner on long enough, it’s extra brutal to brush my curly hair.
- It has a nice light sage citrus scent.
- As far as natural companies go, you won’t find better. Their ingredients are “100% natural and sustainably grown or made and ethically sourced, and small-batch and zero-waste production methods.”

Under Luna Revive Conditioner
Under Luna Revive Conditioner is a super hydrating deep conditioner. It can also be used as a hair mask as well.
- If you have extra dry hair, peak at this one. It’s extremely moisturizing and has a beautiful light jasmine scent. It is a heavy conditioner so you don’t need too much. I just let it soak in my hair at least 5 minutes before rinsing. I love using this for an overnight or all day hair mask as well.
Shop It: Warrior Shampoo, Revive Conditioner
I just finished my last big bottle of Warrior shampoo and have a little left of the Revive conditioner. I’m sure I will circle back to this brand again, but right now I switched to a shampoo and conditioner from Innercense.
Innercense Shampoo and Conditioner
Innercense is a well loved haircare line in the clean beauty world. It seems like there is something for all hair types in this line. They also have many styling products as well. I use their I Create Waves salt spray every week.
Innersense Hydrating Cream Hairbath + Conditioner
I just started using this hydrating Hairbath combo. I like the soft scent, the ability to get a fairly good lather in my hands before applying to my scalp (best I’ve experienced for clean shampoo), and that it is extremely moisturizing. Although I’m like it, I am used to a more cleansing and clarifying shampoo, so I would opt for the clarity hairbath next time.
Two other sets to check out:
- Innersense Pure Harmony Hairbath + Inspiration Conditioner – a good one for most hair types
- Innersense Color Awakening Hairbath + Radiance Conditioner
I LOVE their detox hair mask for removing built-up product.
True Botanicals Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner
This is another set that I have used for years and still rotate in every so often. It works wonders for my thick, wavy/curly hair. It’s not super hydrating so I use it more in summer months, but it gives my hair added volume and helps define my curls. UPDATE: They no longer make this set. Sad, as it worked great for my hair! On the side note, if you are looking for an amazing cleanser, peak at their turmeric ginger one.
UPDATE: I’m now using a combination of Act + Acre with the above Innersense products on rotation. I highly recommend taking the hair quiz on their site so you know which products would work best for you.
Hair Care Tips
I am far from a hair expert, but maybe some of these tips will help you.
- Give it time when you transition to a new shampoo or conditioner. It can take a good 5-10 washes or so before your hair adjusts to it and starts to look and feel better. It may just be a period of your hair detoxing out the excess chemicals found in your prior conventional products. Your hair may feel dry and coarse during this time. With this said, sometimes it just isn’t going to work for your hair. To avoid waste, use shampoos for bubble bath and conditioner for shaving your legs.
- Oily hair tends to need more frequent washing and dry thick hair can go longer between washes. This is why you hear opposing information of how often you should wash your hair. Just do what works for you.
- Double cleansing, which I have already mentioned, can be super helpful. Lather shampoo in your hands and then apply it all over your scalp, really massaging it in. Rinse and then wash again; scalp to ends, but still focusing on the scalp. You get more of a lather in the second application as your hair is cleaner. Sulfates found in conventional shampoos is why they lather better.
- Rinse your hair with cool water. This helps seal in the hair cuticles and moisture, add a bit of shine, and helps keep your hair cleaner. I also wash and rinse my hair upside down to give it a bit more volume. Not comfortable, but worth it.
- I only apply conditioner to the length of my hair (neck down), so it doesn’t weigh down the volume at my roots.
- I hold my hair as I brush from the bottom to avoid more breakage. I also put my hair in a hair wrap to get it a bit drier before brushing out my rather tangly curls. If you don’t have a hair wrap, just use a large t-shirt and wrap it up and secure it with a headband until it dries a bit more.
- To help with frizz and breakage, I sleep on a silk pillowcase.
