Michigan Trip – Getaway Barber Creek Cabin

We booked a last minute stay at “Getaway Barber Creek” in Grand Junction Michigan early this week and it was such a good trip. It’s about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Chicago so it makes for a great weekend getaway.
On our way to the tiny house cabin we took the scenic route so we could do a little exploring.

We stopped in New Buffalo which has a small downtown area. We almost skipped this stop since we have been before and there was not much, but I am so glad we stopped!
There are three new shops here – Lakeside Goods, Eastern Standard Time, and Shore. Everything was eye candy. I only walked away with a cute linen hand towel, but it was fun to peak at everything. When I’m that way again, I will definitely make the stop.

After New Buffalo, we stayed off of the major highway so we could stop at any antique store or place that drew us along the way to Grand Junction. We did not find anything that was a must-stop to share, but it was fun to explore.

Once we got closer to our tiny cabin, our GPS took us on a long roundabout way and we were starting to question where we booked. Let’s just say we were happy we had plenty of gas and that our cell reception was still good. So if you book a Barber Creek Getaway Cabin and your drive there starts to feel super sketchy, you are on the same wrong path that we were. Luckily our phone GPS helped us out.

We arrived at our tiny cabin around 4:00pm (an hour after the check-in time). Michigan is on EST so we lost an hour going there, but gained an hour on our way back.

These cabins are super tiny – 140 sq ft. I think I would have a hard time staying in them longer than two nights due to the small living space and making meals in the kitchen, but it is such a good retreat for 1 or 2 nights!
We quickly made ourselves at home and Mark started a fire. It was a cold, drizzly day, but thankfully the rain stopped when we arrived so we could be outside.

For food, we brought oatmeal for breakfast, water, lemons for lemon water in the morning, coconut water in place of our green juice, Mary’s Gone Crackers, zucchini hummus, chopped veggies, bananas, and prechopped/made ingredients to make the salad below. For dinner, we just made saffron rice on the stovetop so we could have a warm element mixed with the same ingredients.
Heating up soup, making simple pasta (bring a strainer), and oatmeal are probably the easiest meals to make in the tiny cabin. There are two small burners, no oven or microwave.

I took one sip of wine and didn’t care for it, so I made myself a hot little concoction instead. (I mixed the Happiness, Adaptogenic, and Coconut Cream, but skipped the mellow rooster.) They provide camp mugs, but I brought my own cups from home. 😊

Thankfully the cabin gifted a small smores pack as I did not pack any. My husband loves to make a smore around the fire.

Sleeping in the bed with the large window view was pretty amazing.

After checking out of our cabin we stopped at different towns along the way, but our favorite which we have been before is Saugatuck, MI. We did some boutique shopping and strolled the marina.
We had lunch at The Farmhouse Deli & Pantry in Douglas, MI. Minutes from downtown Saugatuck. I got the vegan kale salad and the veggie hummus wrap (substituted for toasted GF bread). My husband got the turkey Rueben and cauliflower soup.

We stopped at the Dutch Farm Market in South Haven since the apples were calling us. I didn’t ask if the farm sprays, I just washed them really well.

We did a super quick stroll of South Haven’s downtown, but found ourselves more drawn to the water.

This getaway was such a good reset and felt a lot longer than it actually was.
I already booked us a stay at another Getaway House Cabin next month at the Starved Rock location – even closer to Chicago.

Hello,
How long did you guys stay? Also what was check out time? Did you notice any items that you needed, but didn’t have once you got there?
Hi Raquel! We only stayed one night. I don’t remember the check out time off hand, but I’m guessing it was 10 or 11. Next time we would bring Dr. Bronner’s soap for dishes and body, our own wood/firestarter/newspaper, a blanket for outside, premade food so it’s all ready to go, our own healthier/ish smores, and that’s all I remember since it’s been so long.:) Enjoy your time if you go!
