I prefer to buy fewer, better pieces that will last and can be worn over and over than low quality pieces on the norm. Last year I was going to make the point to only buy ethically and sustainably made pieces going forward. That didn’t last. I tried, but I love fashion too much and didn’t want to feel guilty for buying something that didn’t fit the box. Plus, I enjoy shopping with my girlfriends now and then at mainstream stores and buying from small local businesses when traveling (I don’t want to look up each brand in the moment). Now I just make a really large effort to buy better, but don’t feel guilty when I don’t.
One thing I think that sometimes gets lost when talking about sustainable fashion is that even if we have a ton of fast fashion in our closet, it’s more sustainable to wear what we already own than just ditch it all and buy everything new. Another thing is if you like certain designer brands, you can buy it gently used from places like The RealReal. That is sustainable as well! I’m a BIG fan of shopping thrift and vintage stores too. Not everything has to fit the “square box.”
