Wild blueberries can improve brain health, heart health, vision, detoxify heavy metals, and can help with disease. Because of this, frozen wild blueberries are a staple in my diet. I know I am getting enough antioxidants when they are included in my day. I usually include them in my smoothies, but I put them in pancakes and oatmeal too. If you don’t have them in your diet already, maybe you’ll consider including this superfood now too!
For a good year or so I was making the heavy metal detox smoothie by Medical Medium for my breakfast. The smoothie recipe includes ingredients that have the ability to help drive out heavy metals from your body. (Spirulina, Barley Grass Juice Powder, Cilantro, Wild Blueberries, and Dulse) There are so many heavy metals in this world today that are unavoidable and wreak havoc on our health. So any foods to help detox them daily, let’s include them! This wild blueberry banana smoothie is a spin off of the heavy metal detox smoothie.
Wild Blueberry Banana Smoothie
Serves 1
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup of water or coconut water
- 1 cup of frozen wild blueberries
- 1 banana
- 3 mandarin oranges or the juice from one orange
- 1 tsp barley grass juice powder
- 1 tsp spirulina
- 1/2″ knob of fresh ginger
- 1 tsp dulse flakes
- 2″ chunk of an aloe leaf
Instructions
Add all of the ingredients to your high speed blender and blend until well combined. If you put the frozen blueberries in last, it is easier on the blender. More water takes away from the taste, so try to avoid adding in more water. If you need more liquid, fresh squeezed orange juice or coconut water would be a great substitute or add in.
Tidbits
- I love the zip the raw ginger gives this smoothie. Ginger reduces inflammation and aids in digestion along with a laundry list of healing benefits. If you don’t like ginger though, toss it out of the recipe.
- An aloe leaf is something you may have never bought before. You can find one in the produce section of your grocery stores. Aloe reduces inflammation, aids in digestion, helps with elimination, prevents Candida, and more. It will not change the taste of your smoothie. However, it will make it more hydrating.
- Because of the frozen wild blueberries, it may not feel great to drink a cold smoothie on cooler days. I leave it sit out on the counter for around 20 minutes to get it more room temperature during these times.
- This is not a smoothie you can make in advance and drink hours later. Well, you could, but it does not taste as good. Any smoothie that contains wild blueberries gets super gelatinous after sitting for awhile. Because of this, it’s best to drink the smoothie within an hour of making it. If you want to drink it awhile later, add in a bunch of spinach and some extra water or coconut water. It does the trick!
- I purchase the Wyman’s Frozen Wild Blueberries from Costco. It’s the best deal if you have one close by.
- You can substitute the water for coconut water in this recipe or do about half and half. Coconut water makes it sweeter and adds in magnesium, potassium, and electrolytes.
- The recipe makes around one 16 oz serving. If you are like me and need more to fill you up throughout your morning, add in 1 extra banana and 1/4 cup of water or coconut water.
