The Best Healthy Restaurants In Tulum
I just got back from a week vacation in Tulum, Mexico. My husband and I have enjoyed Tulum so much that this was our fourth trip there in the past 10 years. We know we need to explore more of the world, but it is just so mesmerizing there. The rustic Boho vibe and beautiful beaches are hard to beat. Probably the biggest reason we keep returning though is the delicious and healthy food options!
There are SO many little cafes, restaurants, and huts in Tulum. This guide only scratches the surface, but I think the following is some of the best healthy restaurants Tulum has to offer.
The Best Healthy Restaurants In Tulum
Best Places To Eat In Tulum Beach
RAW LOVE
Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Ha. No, but for real this one is a must stop. Raw Love is plant-based, refined sugar free, dairy free, preservative free, and vegan. It’s a menu full of nourishing super foods. Everything is made from scratch, and they use organic and local when possible. They have everything from hydrating and healthy drinks, beautiful smoothie bowls, raw desserts, coffees/teas/lattes, to entrees like raw pad thai, zucchini alfredo, and living pizza. You are going to want to try the whole menu. We went here at least 4 times, whether it was for breakfast, lunch, or just a snack.
Tips:
- They are cash only, so bring pesos. They do accept US dollars there as well, but the exchange rate there is not the greatest.
- It’s one of the more affordable healthy places along the beach.
- They close at 6:00pm, so it’s a good place for breakfast, lunch, or a snack.
- You can always go there at 5:00pm and order dinner to-go to bring back to your room or eat on the beach.
- Located in Ahau on Tulum Beach (highly recommend this one set in the jungle setting), but they also have a Tulum Town location.
Real Coconut Kitchen
If we were not eating breakfast/brunch at Raw Love, we were at this incredible healthy gem of a restaurant. Real Coconut Kitchen is plant-based, gluten free, dairy free, grain free, soy free, corn free, and they only use avocado oil to cook with. It’s a good thing this restaurant is not in Chicago or it would be so tempting to go out all of the time. It’s just that good. They take any dietary restriction you have very serious and will cater to whatever you need.
It’s a busier place for breakfast and lunch, but they also serve dinner as well. The burrito bowl is amazing here (my husband substituted the eggs in the bowl for their incredible mushrooms). I loved the apple cinnamon cereal with the fresh coconut milk. The fresh coconut milk was a treat in itself. Next time I would try their amazing looking avocado toast as well. If you drink coffee, they also had the best tasting coffee. My husband loved his espresso here.
Tips:
- They take credit card. Brunch was around $60 and dinner was around $120 here (for 2 of us).
- You can also order from their breakfast menu all day (would make dinner less expensive too).
- The quesadillas are SUPER small and not what we thought so we would skip those next time.
- Located at Sanara Hotel on the beach (this is where we went), but there is also one in town.
- Get an ocean front table if it’s available. Heaven….
La Popular
One of the beautiful restaurants located at Hotel NÔMADE. We went for dinner here on our last night and sat on some cushions at one of their low beach front tables. They have live music here many nights and it’s just so magical feeling.
It is at the far south end of the beach, so depending on where you stay you may want to eat lunch here instead so you still have some light. Tulum is dark at night, so it’s a good idea to pack a small flashlight with you.
They have a more fish forward, seafood menu here, but if you are vegan there are still some options for you. They also ask if you have any dietary restrictions right away before you order. My husband and I shared the grilled salmon and vegetables (incredible!), the house salad (pushed the croutons aside), and their quinoa salad (pushed the panela cheese aside).
Tips:
- They take credit card.
- Make a reservation just incase. We made one on their website about 3 hours before and it worked out perfectly.
- This is normally an extra pricey place, but with our choices we came out around $100 for dinner. (that included one cocktail and water). We made up for it by walking to get a warm cookie and coconut ice cream at The Real Coconut afterwards. 😊 Just note that you pay for water everywhere in Tulum, service tax at most places, and gratuity (separate from the service tax).
- They have more side dishes like eggplant, carrots, and a sweet potato if you don’t eat fish.
Macondo
Macondo is the other beautiful restaurant located at NÔMADE. We came here for dinner on our first day here and it was another magical night. It’s eye candy galore. We also lucked out with the coolest musician playing that evening. The menu is Mediterranean forward and they have lots of plant-based and vegan options to order from. I recommend the hummus (ask for veggies to dip), quinoa tabouleh, mejadra (rice, kale, caramelized onion, coriander seeds), and baba ganush.
Tips:
- They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
- Make a reservation on their website just incase (especially if eating dinner as they tend to ask). We didn’t have one, but they were super kind and accommodating.
- Accepts credit card. Bill was around $100 with our choices. (This included one glass of wine and water. If you drink more, obviously your bills will be higher.)
- I have a hard time with vinegar and it seemed like some of our dishes had a lot of it (especially the mushroom kebab we had). Next time I would just ask to omit it from the dishes. They ask right away if you have any dietary restrictions, so I could have easily asked for that if I was thinking of it ahead of time. The nicer hotel restaurants in Tulum all ask if you have any dietary restrictions.
Moro at Habitas
Located at the far north end of Tulum beach, this more secret hidden gem is a must. It was the best meal we’ve ever had in Tulum and we’ve enjoyed a lot of meals there. We went for lunch and shared the Moro Salad, Farm Vegetables, and Black Quinoa. I highly recommend every single one of them, but I don’t think you can go wrong on their menu. My husband also really enjoyed a Mezcal cocktail here and I enjoyed a hot chocolate with cacao and coconut milk.
Tips:
- Make a reservation on their website just incase and put on your cute dress. 😊
- It can be hard to find as you won’t see a sign saying Moro at Habitas. Look for the roadside symbol shown in my picture below. Someone will greet you at the wooden door as you approach from the street. They will ask to look inside any backpack/handbag you are bringing in. Just tell them you are there to eat at Moro and they’ll walk you back.
- We walked from the main beach strip and it was 1 1/2 hour walk. A taxi here is probably your best bet unless you are up for the long hot walk.
- Takes credit card. Our lunch was $80. We felt like this was a deal for Tulum considering how exceptional it was.
Casa Violeta
If you eat gluten and dairy on occasion, Casa Violeta makes for a more inexpensive, but beautiful and relaxing pizza dinner. I eat dairy a few times a year (usually in the form of goat cheese though), and chose to eat it here on vacation. Otherwise you could always just order their delicious organic salad and fish if you eat fish. Casa Violeta uses the freshest organic foods available. Normally I am somewhat leery about ordering salads out, especially Mexico, but I feel safe ordering it at the places we dined at in this guide. I still take an oil of oregano supplement before each salad meal to be extra cautious.
Tip:
- If you try to avoid vinegar like I do, ask for your salad to be plain/without the vinegar dressing and ask for a lemon or lime to squeeze on it instead. They already bring olive oil, sea salt and pepper to the table for you.
- You could always ask for a veggie pizza without cheese too.
- 2 pizzas, 1 large salad, 1 glass of wine, all the taxes and tip, came in around $50ish I believe
Matcha Mama
Matcha Mama is a place to grab a large inexpensive coconut water along your hot walks on the jungle side of Tulum’s beach. I would skip the fruit bowls here though and head to Raw Love instead.
Best Places To Eat In Tulum Town
Burrito Amor
You have to take a cab to town once during your stay to check out the town. The inexpensive food in Tulum Town will make up for the $20 cab fare each way. (It use to be around $10 each way until Tulum got so popular.) Once you get to Tulum Town, head straight for Burrito Amor. Burrito Amor aims at providing clean eating at a “concept that represents a new level of healthy, fresh, conscious, and super clean restaurant quality food and beverage.”
We had the BEST vegan burritos (just ask for no cheese on the veggie burrito) and get the gluten free coconut tortilla. It comes wrapped in banana leaves which you remove before eating. They also have amazing juices and elixirs as well.
Tips:
- Sitting inside gives you more of a breeze than the outer tables right when you walk in.
- I think they take both credit card and cash, but check to be sure. We paid in pesos.
- The best bang for your buck. We got two burritos, guacamole and coconut chips (the guac is a bit salty), 2 coconut waters, water, and GF banana bread all for around $35.
- If you made it to town, for sure check out Kaahal Home – A beautiful home décor store on the strip.
La Hoja Verde
We chose to eat lunch at Burrito Amor and did not stay in town late enough to have another meal at La Hoja Verde, but if we had more time, we would for sure try here. It’s supposedly one of the more popular places in Tulum town for a healthy plant-based, vegan meal. The tacos look incredible from pictures, but they have fruit bowls and lots of other options as well.
More restaurants we would possibly check out next time:
- Tamarindos (Tulum Beach) – “where food freshness and seasonality dictate what dishes we serve”
- Organic Olivia (Tulum Beach – close to Margarita Posada) – We went in the cute space to take a look around, but had just eaten so we would try it out next time.
- Vegan Tacos El Bajon (Tulum Town) – not sure how healthy they look 😉, but they look like tasty plant-based tacos that give you that authentic Mexican flavor.
I hope you found some new places to checkout on your next trip! Use this as your guide, but have fun exploring. There are always new places popping up each time we go and sometimes the best places are the ones you just stumble upon. If you end up going to Tulum and have a great one for me to check out next time, I’d love to hear! Comment below. 🧡
Comment below if you have any questions at all or just want to say hi! Thanks for being here with me!
