If you have wanted to buy a Berkey but are unsure of the cleaning process, my husband shows you how in a slow, actual time, detailed YouTube video. Scroll right down to the bottom if you are ready to start cleaning. If you have not purchased one yet and want a few more tidbits, read on. Code herhealthystyle saves you a little bit off as well.
Is a Berkey Filter Worth It?
If removing a ton of harmful contaminants is worth it to you, it is absolutely worth it. We have only had ours 1 1/2 years and I wish I would have bought it sooner. We use the Berkey for all of our drinking water and filling the teapot. I still fill many of our large pots to boil noodles and such from our sink, but obviously the more you use the Berkey the better. If you purchase a Berkey it comes with your first set of the main black filters, but I also purchased the fluoride filters as well.
Click here to enter your zip code and find out what is in your tap water and see what Berkey is able to remove. I live in downtown Chicago and my water has 20 contaminants, 12 of which exceed the EWG Guidelines. Berkey is able to remove 16 of them; I think that is pretty great.
If you travel a ton check out the Berkey water bottle. I don’t love drinking out of the plastic straw, but I have one just incase for places like the airport and Mexico. It’s probably better suited if you are adventurous and hiking or living in the woods for a week and need to filter some water somewhere. For the rest of us though, it is a back up plan.
What Size Berkey Should I Buy? Big Berkey Vs. Royal Berkey
The Big Berkey holds 2.25 gallons of water and the Royal Berkey holds 3.25 gallons of water.
After going back and forth with the Royal size, I bought the Big Berkey and am really happy with my choice. I could have easily gotten the Royal since we usually go through more than 2 gallons a day, but the Royal is just too big in our kitchen and harder to fill. If you have a large family though and space is not an issue, I would still look at the Royal.
If you do get the Royal I would search for a floor stand or put it on a lower cabinet instead of your countertop to make it easier to fill. I purchased the smaller Berkey stainless stand for my Big Berkey and can’t imagine not having it. If you are still hesitant, measure the different heights in your kitchen or wherever you plan on putting it and that will probably give you your answer. It’s what gave me mine. And even though I go through more than 2 gallons a day, I don’t mind refilling my Berkey with a large jar or pitcher as I need to. Code herhealthystyle saves you a little bit off.
