Why Does Chocolate Make Us Feel Happy?

Cacao gives us feelings of love, energy, and happiness. It contains the chemical anandamide, which is the neurotransmitter responsible for these feel good feelings. It also contains a good amount of iron and magnesium which is another reason women reach for it during their cycle as it can make us feel better.

What are some disadvantages of eating chocolate?

Cacao is a stimulant, contains caffeine, and has the toxic theobromine in it, so it’s best to have cacao in moderation if you enjoy it. I know for me it can be addictive so I limit my intake and treat it as a treat. I also notice I don’t sleep as well when I’m having a square of dark chocolate every day. When I do eat or drink it however, I pick high quality products with pure ingredients. Also, I find that a square or two of dark chocolate keeps me from making less healthy choices when I’m out and about. I usually always pack a bar when I leave for a weekend or trip.

Hu Chocolate Bars

My #1 recommendation when you are trying to find a healthier chocolate bar is Hu’s. They are perfectly sweetened with unrefined coconut sugar and they are the best tasting bars! They come in a variety of flavors, but I have only tried the cashew butter and simple dark chocolate. My husband’s favorite is the cashew butter.

Hu Chocolate Gems

Hu’s also makes dark chocolate gems that you can eat as is, or stick one or two (they are large) on top of a cookie before you bake it for a healthier chocolate chip cookie.

And they make chocolate covered almonds and cashews too!

EVOLVED 100% Cacao Chocolate Bar with Coconut

If you are into super dark chocolate like I am, check out Evolved. I like the coconut one. It’s made with 3 ingredients – organic cacao, organic coconut, and organic cacao butter.

Alter Eco 100% Cacao

This is another bar to look at if you like super super dark chocolate with zero sugar in it.
